Gunflint Mercantile is a very special place located in scenic Grand Marais Minnesota. Upon finding Gunflint Mercantile, you can rest easily out front of the store on our large log bench, or just come right in for a free fudge sample.

As the door swings open, the northwoods scent of a turn-of-the century mercantile is both pleasing and refreshing. The center aisle is filled with an assortment of old style candy sticks, suckers and lollipops for the kids (or parents), and often a pot of wild rice soup is found brewing in the back. There are walls filled with soups, ready-to-make stews, pasta, beans and lentels.

Of course the backpacker will delight in finding the Pack Lite Foods section where even the most weary outdoors person will hardly feel the weight of the world’s most delicious and lightweight food for the trail.

The coffee lover’s eyes naturally perk up with the amazing selection of fine coffees. Many have been known to find it difficult which of the refreshing and hearty blends to choose. You will find that even the feel of the vacuum sealed bags promise a smooth and luxurious cup of Joe for many mornings to come.

The baskets of tasty dried fruit, renowned soups, and thick pancake batters lining the shelves show stiff competition to the scrumptious hand-made candies and fudge made fresh right in the back. After only a few short moments, the chocolate aroma works on your senses, drawing you back to sample some free fudge found on a plate held by Gunflint’s tall wooden moose. Many will perhaps notice the moose seems to almost be staring at the ice cream station where various flavors tempt the eyes with their colors, texture, and promising smooth moments of ice-cold indulgence. We often wonder if he is jealous, or just gloating over the privilege of serving up the scrumptious fudge.
